                                                  Brain’s Return by Gary Paulsen
Evan McCorkle
February, 2011

Brian is 16 years old and spent a couple of years on an island and learned how to survive. He went back to his mom’s after a couple of years and his mom tried to make him live a civilized way with normal society and school. Then he realized he couldn’t deal with it. His adventure started when he was at his mom’s house. Later he went on his journey to the island were his close friends the Smallhorns live on. He ran into bears, wolves, a deer, and a ton of blood sucking mosquitoes.
Brian hates school! He gets annoyed by all the kids who talk about who is cool and who is not. Also, Brian was sick of cars, television, horns, and all the loud noises you could think of that are in a town. One time Brian went to a party and ran into Carl a big football player that asked Susan out and she said ,“no”. Carl got mad and he is furious to see that Susan is with Brian. So, he threw open a door and tried to hit Brian but hit Hayley with the door and it makes his nose poor out blood. Hayley is Brian’ s friend. Next Carl hit Brian in the face and Brian gets so mad and starts swinging punches with his fists open. He is going for Carl’s stomach, face, back of his head, and his eyes. Later that night, cops come and Brian gets arrested. They let him off, and they drive him home and tell his mom what he has done. They give her a retired cop’s number for anger management classes and Brian’s mom takes him to see the retired cop whose name is Caleb.
When Brian got to Caleb’s house and asked if he had to talk to Caleb, his mom said yes. He walked in and said hi and he noticed that Caleb was blind after he tried to give Caleb the money that Brian pays him for his anger management classes. Caleb asked about the wilderness Brian had been in. Caleb asked if it is beautiful and Brian was shocked by the question but he then said, ”yes”. Then Caleb asked if he wanted to talk about the wild island. Brian told him all about his adventures. Next, Brian brings up that he is going back to the island and Caleb tells Brian to write him letters every day and tell him how beautiful it is there.
After that Brian goes to his moms and makes a list of what he needs for the adventure. He told his mom that he is going back to the island. She said ok. That night he stayed up wondering what supplies to order. The next day, he orders everything off his list and practices with his bow and arrow with a haystack as a target. Then he made arrows for his bow and packed his gear.
He then flew to the island. It was a short flight that took only 45min.Brian was now on the island and his journey was just about over. He was on the river going to his friends the Smallhorns. It was hot out and Brian was making way and he was paddling hard up the river. He stopped that evening and made his tent, ate, and went to sleep. The next day it took him a very long time to get to the Smallhorns house, but made it to their house and he was happy he finally made it!

I enjoyed the book Brian’s Return because it was action packed and had little gore in it. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in adventure and very little gore.
